Elder Scrolls 6: Release Date Now Likely Tied To Next-Gen Consoles

The anticipation for the next installment in the Elder Scrolls saga has been building for years, with an interesting rumor that has recently been gaining traction – that the game will be one of the launch titles for the next-gen Xbox console. Bethesda confirmed the game way back in 2018, and TESVI officially entered early development after leaving the pre-production/concept phase back in 2023 – which at that time marked a significant milestone in the development of the game. Since then there hasn’t been much news out of the developer team or Microsoft about it but the recent rumor makes a lot of sense (sadly).

Given how long fans have waited to explore the new and expansive world, delaying the timeline even further out is frustrating to a lot of people. Previously, sources suggested a possible release in 2026 but that seemed unlikely given the lengthy development process for games in the series. Now that the game will likely be tied to the release of the next generation of Xbox console, The Elder Scrolls VI is more likely to be released sometime in 2027 or 2028.

As far as platforms, the understanding was that the game could be exclusive to Windows and Xbox consoles after Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda. But recent news out of Microsoft has been that they are more open to making their software available to all platforms so a possible next-gen PlayStation tie-in would make a lot of sense as well.

The 2027 timeline (or beyond) will allow Bethesda to concentrate on projects like Starfield while this massive game is being worked on. At some point you would expect them to shift over and commit all of their resources to Elder Scrolls 6, but if everyone is waiting on the next-gen consoles that would still be years away.

If the game is developed for next-gen consoles, we can expect a significant advancement in technology and gameplay compared to its predecessor, Skyrim. Although Bethesda has not confirmed any specific details, rumors suggest possible locations such as Hammerfell or High Rock. Fans are optimistic about improved graphics, enhanced crafting systems, and more dynamic world interactions in this highly anticipated sequel.
