Google CEO talks about the future of AI, Waymo and quantum computing

Sundar Pichai is having what may be his best week at work in a couple of years. I met the Alphabet and Google CEO in Mountain View Wednesday afternoon amidst a string of victories big and small for the company, from a Nobel prize ceremony to a groundbreaking new AI model to a breakthrough in quantum computing.

Entering his 10th year as CEO, Pichai is always even keeled, whether under pressure or taking a victory lap. But as he walked into a cozy meeting room, he seemed to have subtle bounce in his step and a lightness that may be linked to a kind of vindication.

Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, it’s been a bumpy ride at Google — at least from the outside. The conventional wisdom was that Google somehow missed the ChatGPT moment and was panicking. The AI models it did release made widely-publicized mistakes. But Pichai told me he never doubted the company’s long term plan, choosing to stay the course and play the long game.

  • “I think there is a chance for us to work as a country together,” Pichai said in an interview with Semafor published Thursday night. “These big, physical infrastructure projects to accelerate progress is something we would be very excited by.”
